GIRL ATHLETES

ANNUAL SPORTS DAY DISPLAYS AT CARLAW PARK A swiftly-moving pageant, featuring colour, grace and precision, was presented by the Auckland Girls' Athletic Association at Carlaw Park on Saturday afternoon. The gathering, which was the culmination of three months' careful training, attracted a very large attendance and. as in previous years, a high standard was set by the several hundred girls competing in the various events. A high wind, and occasional squalls of driving rain, failed to mar tho colourful spectacle and the programme was put through in excellent time. A healthy spirit of friendly rivalry existed between the teams from the different business houses and, throughout the afternoon, competition was particularly keen. Attractively attired in brightly-coloured uniforms, the girls presented a brilliant picture, particularly in tho marching events and tho folk dancing. Their displays indicated keen attention io initial training and also reflected considerable credit on the organisers and instructors. Twenty teams took part, an increase of 12 on tho entries when the contest was last held in 1012, and, individually, some 320 girls competed. Tho march past was particularly impressive, although the high wind made the task of those carrying the banners extremely difficult. Good form was shown in the athletic events, and in the relays the baton changing was especially good. Tho highlight of the afternoon was the marching competition for tho honour of Miss A.G.A.A., 1014, and great interest was taken in the event by both the public and the competitors, The winner was Miss Marge Bell (Berlei), with Miss Nancy Gow (Belvedere Mauvo) second and Miss Florence Driggs (Belvedere White) third. In spite of Ihe boisterous weather conditions, the girls entered into the spirit of tho events with commendable enthusiasm and cheerfulness. WORLD'S RECORDS GREAT SWEDISH RUNNERS Sweden's two famous medium and long-dis-tance runners. Guilder Haegg and Arne Andersson, have already shown brilliant form. Haegg started the 1044 athletic season' in Sweden with a new world's record, his twelfth since August. 1941. by lowering his own record for two miles from 8m 47.8s to (im 40.45. The race, which took place in the town of Ostersund, in North Sweden, was entirely dominated by Haegg, who beat the second man by no less than 23.2 secpnds. It may be recalled in this connection that, during his trip to America last year, when he ran the two miles three times, Haegg's best time was 8m 51.Ms. „ A few days after the above-mentioned race. Haegg mot Sweden's second great medium-distance star, Arne Andersson, in a 1500-metre race in the Stockholm Stadium. Andersson. who holds the world's record of 3m 45s for this distance, succeeded in beating Haegg after an exciting finish over the fast 100 metres, making a time of 3tn 48.85, against Haegg's 3m 50.25. That Sweden has quite a team of outstanding medium-distance runners was clearly shown on this occasion when two others went below 3ra 61s and three more below 3m 545. In tho same competitions, good results were obtained in the 5000-metre race, which G Jacobson won in 14m 32.85, and in the walking race, Sweden's champion, Verner Hardmo, set up a new world's record for the two miles with 13m 00.8s.
