YACHT RACING

OPENING OF SEASON OVER 100 BOATS COMPETE Perfect conditions prevniled for the official opening of the yachting season on the Waitomata Harbour on Saturday afternoon, over 100 boats taking part in the combined rtcing under the control of the Auckland Yacht and .Motor-boat Association. There was a iarge attendance of the public at Weethaven, and spectacular and keen racing was witnessed. A pleasing feature was the entry of six competitors in the keel class and, although none of the big A and B class yachts took part, there were several cruising about and, as the season progresses, Aucklanders should 6ee them out in force. •, The M and V classos provided a stirring sight, both at the start and as thoy came down wind with all extras drawing. There was an increase in the entries in these classes, but the small classes still predominated, the Z class providing an entry of 40 boats about 30 of them making the best start of the day when they crossed almost in line. Eight clubs took part in the racing, and (he most successful boat was the M class Marahi, with wins in six clubs. The old keclcr. Speedwell, performed well to gain threo wins, two seconds and a third. The V class Matara had threo wins and a second, while the Z class Zippa had four wins, one second and two thirds. Evaine was the most successful in the T and Y class, with three wins and a third. The breeze, which was swinging early in the afternoon, came steadily out of the southwest ae racing commenced, and most of the boats could carry leaders up to the marks off Chelsea, while all extras were put on for the run down harbour. The strong breezo corning down Curran Street caused some anxious moments as the boats cleared the shelter of the Westhavcn wall, but only one capsize took placo.
