COUNCIL OF SPORT
RECREATION RESERVES
NATIONAL POLICY WANTED (P.'A.) WELLINGTON, Wednesday
The first annual meeting of the New Zealand Council of Sport was attended by some 74 delegates, representing 11 national organisations and 13 provincial bodies. The president, Mr W. A. Jenkins, of Dunedin, presided. The annual report stated that one of the prime functions of the managerial committee was to define its activities for the year, and it had decided that it was to act a.s an advisory body to the Minister and to the National Council of Physical Welfare and Recreation on all matters pertaining to organised sport , and recreation, assume the responsibility of seeing that a national survey of membership and recreational facilities be undertaken and completed and, as an emergency measure only, to assist in completing an equitable allocation of sporting requisites. Aiding Provincial Councils
Discussion took place regarding the best means of giving financial assistance to provincial councils of sport. A motion that the Government be asked to allocate a certain amount from art unions for this purpose was carried.
The management committee was requested to explore the possibility of the issue of a special sports stamp or stamps, the proceeds of the sale of which would be devoted to physical education welfare and recreation, and be applied in whole or part to assisting or subsidising the activities of the New Zealand Council of Sport and its affiliated members,
Concern was expressed at the alienation nf reserves, particularly by hospital hoards. The following motion was carried; "That the Government be requested to declare a national policy concerning the alienation of reserves and the provision of recreational facilities and playing fields in conjunction with all Government housing schemes. This conference expresses some concern with the present position." Survey of Facilities It- was decided to ask the physical welfare and recreation branch of the Internal Affairs Department, in collaboration with the councils of sport, to undertake a national survey of recreational facilities in the Dominion. The meeting resolved that every effort be made to bring Canterbury into the Council of Sport, and toward that end the president and chairman of the management committee be asked to visit Canterbury at an early date to endeavour to bring this about. Mr Jenkins was re-elected president, and Mr J. Meltzer was re-elected chairman of the management committee.
