TROTTING CUP HAUGHTY ON BACK MARK RECORD OF HAROLD LOGAN By ABAYDOS The champion pacing mare Haughty will attempt next Saturday to win the New Zealand Trotting Cup for tho third year in succession. The only one to accomplish this feat hai been Indianapolis, who won the race in 1934, 1935 and 1930. A number have succeeded twice, the first to gain this honour being Wildwood Junior, who scored in 1909 and 1910. The trotting mare Reta Peter won in 1920 and 1921, but her second success was gained after Sherwood, who beat her, was placed second for interference. Ahuriri was victorious in 1925 and 1920, ami finished third in 1928 to Peter Bingen and Great Bingen. Peter Bingen won again in 1929 and thus joined the ranks of dual winners. Harold Logan won in 1931 and 3932, and in 1934, from 72 yards, was third behind Indianapolis, 12, and Blue Mountain, limit. It was in tbis race that Harold Logan made his world race record of 4.12 2-5 for two miles. Indianapolis winning in 4.15 4-5. Harold Logan contested the race again in 1936 and was fourth behind Indianapolis, Red Shadow and War Buoy. Lucky Jack, winner in 1937 and 1939, was second to Morello in 1938. Red Shadow, winner in 1933, was third in 1935 and second in 1930. Haughty scored her first success in 1912 and won again last year. She is on a difficult mark in the coming contest, but her brilliant form suggests prospects from 60 yards. J. Bryce's Six Wins When Wildwood Junior won in 1910 ho ran 4.33, which stood as the race record until Win Soon won in 4.31 in 1914. Adelaide Direct reduced the time to 4.27 4-5 in 1917 and a year later Author Dillon registered 4.20 2-5. The Australian pacer. Sheik, who won in 1924, lowered the record to 4.25 4-5, and Ahuriri, in 1920, ran 4.25. At his first success Peter Bingen went 4.22 1-5 and his second victory was achieved in 4.18 4-5. Harold Logan reduced the time to 4.18 2-5 in 1931, and tho following year brought the winning record ta 4.16 2-5. Indianapolis reduced it to 4.15 4-5 in 1934, and it was not beaten until 1941. when Josedale Grattan won in 4,15. The succeeding year Haughty prevailed in 4.13 4-5 and last year her time was 4.13 3-5. J. Bryce, who, with F. Holmes and R. Tounley, is retiring from race driving at the end of this month, has a great record in the New Zealand Trotting Cup. He has trained six winners. Cathedral Chimes, Ahuriri (2),-Red Shadow, all of whom he drove, Great Hope, driven by J. Brycc, jun., and Kohara,' who was piloted by A. Bryce. The Bryce family also has a splendid record in the Auckland Trotting Cup. Bryce, sen., having trained six winning candidates, Cathedral Chimes. Admiral Wood, Man o' War (2), Ahuriri and Shadow Maid. Of these he drove Cathedral Chimes, Man o' War (first time) and Ahuriri. A. Bryce was behind Man o' War the second time, and J. Bryce, jun., drove Shadow Maid. Tho late A. J. Julian drove Admiral Wood. A. Bryco also won tho race two years in succession driving Goid Jacket Three Newcomers Of thoso engaged in the raco next Satur-! day, Countless, Pacing Power and Gold Bar finished second, third and fourth respectively to Haughty last year when Bayard. Bronze Eagle, Parshall, Shadow Maid. Hardy Oak and Loyal Rcy were unplaced. The previous year. Loyal Rey, Bayard and Gold Bar filled the places behind Haughty, Bronze Eagle and Clockwork being unplaced. In that raco Loyal Rey, 4.13 1-5, returned the fastest time, and Bayard, 4.13 2-5, made new race figures for a stallion. Newcomers to the class are Integrity, Indian Clippor and Loyal Friend. Integrity, since failing badly at the Auckland summer meeting last season, has won three races in the South Island, his best effort at two miles being 4.20 4-5 to win the Express Handicap at Addington at Easter. Integrity won the Hannon Memorial Handicap at Oamaru last, Monday. Indian Clipper last season won four races, including tho Hayward Handicap at Addington in November in 4.20 2-5 and the Chamnion Pacing Free-for-All at Easter, when tie narrowly defeated Haughty. Loyal Friend won two races in the South beforo coming to Epsom in December, where he won the Auckland Trotting Cup and the President's Handicap. He was narrowly beat-en by Parshall in tho Free-for-All. Bronzo Eagle has improved a good deal this season, as was evidenced by his success in tho August Handicap at Addington in 4.17. While Haughty and Pacing Power are tho mostdiscussed candidates at present, Bronzo Eagle. Indian Clipper, Integrity, Parshall and Loyal Friend have many supporters The field is as follows: — NEW ZEALAND TROTTING CUP. Of £SOOO and gold cup valued at £100; limit, -1.27; 2 miles.
