WAtfC-ANUI, Sunday The public had a good innings on the concluding day of the Wanganui Jockey Club's Spring Meeting yesterday, when they selected six winning favourites. Six of the eight races were won by the top-weight and five of these were first fancies. The Wanganui Guineas was won by the locally-trained .Alright, who was a slightly better favourite than Master led. Unfortunately an interesting contest was marred by a melee at the home turn which may have affected the result. Tifox was the pacemaker at this stage, with Master Ted outside him, and Alright trailing them. As they swung into line for the run home Tifox hung out and carried Master Ted with him. thus giving Alright an opening on the rails. Alright quickly dashed through into the lead and victory. Broughton. on Master Ted, did his best to force Tifox back to a straight line, and the jostling that ensued cost both Master Ted and Tifox winning chances. Master Ted then set off after .Alright and ran him to half a length, with Tifox three length away third. The other three runners were outclassed. An inquiry was held into the interference with Master Ted by Tifox, but no action was considered necessary. Alright has now won at his only two starts. He is a three-year-old gelding by Inflation from Damaris, by Limond, and is owned and trained by Mr L. G- Paul, Wanganui. Damaris won the Wanganui Guineas in 1927 and the Great Northern Oaks in 1928 for her breeder, Mr G. M. Currie. ELLERSLIE TRAINING V RARA AVIS SPRINTS FREELY BY ARCHER Smart efforts over three furlongs by Rara Avis and Cowper were features of the training gallops at Ellerslie on Saturday. The No. 2 grass was in use and the going was good, the ground having dried considerably the preceding day. Rara Avis (B. Markwick) sprinted three furlongs in 3S 3-os. going smoothly throughout. He has been working well for some weeks past, but has run disappointingly in his last two starts. Present intentions are to start Rara Avis in the Parawai Handicap at Paeroa next Saturday. Cowper (C. Markwick) was timed to run three furlongs in 39 3-ss. He has made steady progress since returning from a spell and may not take long to reach racing condition again. Cowper showed promising form when he won the second division of the Eden Hack Handicap, one mile, at Ellerslie last April. He is a four-year-old gelding by Mr Standfast from Illyria, by Iliad from Sunkissed (imp.), by Sunstar from Kiss Cannon, by Gay Crusader. On breeding Cowper should be able to run middle distances when he is matured. Sir Dingle (Brett) did a working gallop over a round in 1.59 3-5, the last half-mile in 55 3-ss. He is holding his condition splendidly. Prince Revel (B. Markwick) completed useful work with three furlongs in. 44 l-ss. He went well in his first start of the season when he ran second to Park Royal in the first division of the Avondale Jockey Club's Spring Meeting on September 9. Victory Song (Craig) was under restraint while running three furlongs in 435. Ho is very bright and muscular and R. G. Stenning should have him in excellent order for the Auckland Racing Club's Spring Meeting on October 14. Sir Fox (Anderson) worked over a round, running the last balf-mile in 55 3-ss. He is in good condition, but his form has been very moderate. Chung Chong, Tea Gong and Vindicator ran four furlongs in 53 3-ss. Chung Chong is a three-year-old gelding, by Lang Bian from Oriwai. Ho has not raced, but appears to be making a little improvement. Chung Chong belongs to a family that has produced a few good stayers, his dam Oriwai being by Arausio from Waterlea. by Boniform from Sunbird, by Martian from Mary of Argyle, by Grafton. Sunbird was a full-sister to Ardenvohr, winner of the New Zealand Cup in 1916, and to Mascot, winner of the Auckland Cup in 1918. Diamond Pay began in front and led Herolo Star and Just Ora over five furlongs in 1.8 3-5. The Fake, looking well, completed useful work with three furlongs in 425. Commissar ran four furlongs comfortably in 55 3-ss. Firm Lass covered the same ground in 55 l-ss. Advance Eagle (Pitman) beat Meer Love (Howard) over four furlongs in 55 2-ss. Foxsen (B. Markwick) and Tiger Tan (Pitman) beat Dependable (light bojy over a round in 1.49 3-5, Foxsen and Tiger Tan finishing solidly over the last half-mile in 545. Foxsen and Tiger Tan. both trained by G. Jenkins, are candidates for the President's Handicap, VA miles, at Paeroa next Saturday. Tiger Tan. who has won at his last two starts, is also in the Parawai Handicap, six furlongs. Sir Isaacs went steadily over a round in 2.3. Billy Peach (C. Markwick) encompassed a round in 1.51 1-5. Wee Mite (Bagby) bring, ing him home over the last half-mile in 53 l-ss. Billy Peach is carrying a bright and muscular appearance. King Lume (Howard) went twice over the steeplechase fences on the fiat, and, although he ran down a couple of the obstacles, gave a good display for a beginner. The New Plymouth jockey L. Dulieu will be riding at the coming meetings at Paeroa. ENGLISH ST. LEGER (Reed. 8.40 p.m.) LONDON. Sept. 17 The St. Leger resulted:—The Aga Khan's Tehran (Gordon Richards). 1; Lord Derby's Borealis (H. Wragg). 2; Lord Rosebery's Oceanswell (E. Smith), 3. Won by one and a-half lengths. Time, 3m 6 l-ss. FOALS BY BEAU LEON The first foals sired by Beau Leon are announced from To Awamutu. They are colts, one from Galilee and the other from Lady Diana. The colt from Galilee provides an interesting case of inbreeding, his sire and darn being half-brother and sister. Beau Leon is by Beau Pero from Lady Bede. and Galileo is by Chief Ruler from Lady Bede. AN UNUSUAL ANIMAL Templo Chief, winner of the Mentone Cup recently, is described by liis trainer, E. J. Willmott. as an unusual animal. "The leaner ho is the better he is, and the softer the track the better he is," said Willmott. Obviously somo backers knew those facts before the race, because Temple Chief was backed for large amounts at long prices to win. Few horses still in the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups have raced in more cup races than has Temple Chief, who has run in 11 such contests. Ho has won three of them—the Perth Cup, W.A.T.C. Easter Cup and the Mentone Cup. Although a seven-year-old, he proved by his Mentone Cup win with 8.2 that he is as good as, if not better than, ever. Ho has 8.0 in the Caulfield Cup and 7.11 in the Melbourne Cup. Temple Chief is by Pantheon front Pistyll. i ,
