SHILLING FINES

' ■'■■ . lil , !NIGHT CLUB MANAGERS

CITY COUNCIL'S ATTITUDE A charge of operating a dance halJ without a licence on June 24 was preferred against Ernest James Graham, I ' manager of the Rio Club (Mr Terry), before Mr J. H Luxford, S.M., yesterday. Pleading guilty, counsel said i that an appeal by defendant against the City Council's refusal to issue* a licence had since been upheld. It was alleged that the council had not given judicial consideration to the mattemrequired of it under the Municipal Corporations Act, and the appeal showed that this allegation was substantially true. It was apparent froni the evidence produced at the appeal'that the council was opposed to night clubs, and < it refused a licence without the inquiry it was obliged to make. The Court would show its reaction to the circumstances disclosed by imposing a fine of Is, without costs, said the magistrate. /m , _ . . , . Harry 0. Burton (Mr Henry) pleaded guilty to eight similar charges concerning the Glendowie, Country Club. His position was identical, said counsel. The magistrate imposed a line of Is, without costs, on each information. A further charge against Burton of keeping the Glenciowi ( e Country Club_ as a place of resort for the consumption of intoxicating liquor was denied. The magistrate dismissed the charge.
