Second-Lieutenant S. M. I<\ Martin, who has received the immediate award of the Military Cross for gallant and distinguished service in Italy, is the only son of* Mr. and Mrs. M. Martin, of Thames. He had a brilliant record at the Thames School of Mines, gaining the Bruce Medal and a mining scholarship admitting him to the Otago University.

Two years ago, he graduated at Otago, and was last year admitted as a member of the Australian Mining Institute. His wife, Mrs. Ruth Martin, at present a student at Victoria University College, Wellington, is the second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. N. Thompson, 40 Grovo Street. St. Kilda, Dunedin.

PARADE POSTPONED

INTERRUPTED BY RAIN Because of an interruption by heavy rain, the annual church parade of the ambulance and nursing cadets of the St. John Ambulance Brigade yesterday afternoon at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church. Symonds Street, was postponed. The parade. le\l by the St. John Ambulance Cadet Band, started out from East Street, but only the first of the three corps participating reached tiie church, where the salute was taken bv the Brigade Commissioner, Mr. D. V. Mackav, who was accompanied hv the Mayor, Mr. A. C. Allum. The other 'two corps were able to shelter under shop verandahs, but the church service was abandoned. _ Mr. Mackav said it would be held in the near future.
