CHARGE OF ASSAULT TWO MEN SENT TO GAOL "You young Maoris are becoming touts for sly grogging," said Mr. J. H. Luxford, S.M., yesterday, when two labourers, Adam Matthew Tomuri, aged 22, and Harry Martin, aged 20, pleaded guilty to assaulting an American sailor. Sub-inspector Harley said the accused met complainant early in the morning and offered to try to get some liquor for him. The sailor followed them round for a while, but an argument arose, and they both struck the sailor, knocking him down. His injuries were not severe, however. Remarking that both had long lists of previous convictions, the magistrate sent each man to gaol for one month. SOLDIER CHARGED Charged with committing an unnatural offence against a male, George William Lisk, soldier, aged .36 (Mr. Henrv), pleaded not guilty before Mr. Justice Fair and a jury yesterday. A similar plea was entered to charges of attempting to commit the offence and of indecently assaulting a male. Mr. Cleal prosecuted. The offences were alleged to have been committed on March 27 at Narrow Neck military camp, where accused is a gardener. It was alleged that the offences were committed against another soldier at the same camp. Evidence had been given by six witnesses for' the prosecution, when the case was adjourned until to-day.
TRANSPORT OF STOCK Rail transport of fat stock to the Waikato markets will be provided until June 1, stated an official at the Auckland railway station. He was replying to a statement that the number of railway waggons available at that centre was not sufficient to cone with the exceptional demand and that it might be some weeks before the surplus could be cleared. The official said the present time was the season for fat stock and in order to convey the increased number of this type of cattle it had been found necessary in some cases to refuse orders to transport boners to the markets. An easing in the position was expected after' June 1 and it was anticipated that all orders, including boners, would be transported without any difficulty after that date.
