TOYS FOR CHILDREN NIGHT WATCHMAN'S HOBBY Attractive and well-finished wooden toys for the entertainment of crippled children in the Wilson Home are being made as a spare-time hohby by Mr. Sam Whitford, of Ponsonby, a night watchman. Mr. Whitford designs the toys and uses such readily available material as butter boxes and fruit and other cases. The only tools he employs are a hammer. a handsaw, a hacksaw and improvised vices. Typical of the work he produces are models of an ambulance, a cannon, a truck and a 14-wheeled railway engine. He first became interested in the needs of these handicapped children through a young relative of his who lias been a patient in the Wilson Home, and who is about to be discharged cured at the end of this month. AMUSING COMEDY "ARSENIC AND OLD LACE" Humour and horror enter into partnership in Joseph Kesselring's comedy, "Arsenic and Old Lace," which was presented in Auckland for the first time at His Majesty's Theatre on Saturday night by a very competent J. C. Williamson cast.. There was a large audience, the frequent laughter from which was a tribute to the cleverness of a play the object of which was to provoke hilarity from wholesale homicide. A story of two apparently harmless old aunts, noted for their kindliness and piety, who. in order to bring peace to lonely old men, have poisoned a round dozen of them, and a nephew visitor, who has escaped from a prison for the criminally insane and also has killed 12 men. "Arsenic and Old Lace" is a. brilliantly-conceived farce. The dialogue is, at times, very sophisticated. All the action takes place in one room of the aunts' home. An excellent performance was given by Lloyd Lamble in the role of Jonathan Brewster, the criminal lunatic whose face had been altered to resemble that of Boris Karloff. As the "dear oid aunts," Ethel Gabriel and Lily Moore were responsible for admirable character acting and John Tate was convincing in a difficult part as Teddy Brewster, whose mental weakness is that he believes himself to be Theodore Roosevelt. The New Zealander Bettina Welch, a.s Elaine Harper, and Allan Christie, as Mortimer Brewster, were successful as an engaged young couple who suddenly find themselves involved in a series of hair-raising incidents. Sam Stern was an amusing Dr. Einstein, a plastic surgeon, and the minor roles were filled satisfactorily. SOCCER OPENING Soccer football was opened in Auckland ori Saturday, when the eitrht first division matches were played. A high standard of play was provided and a eood season seems assured. The presence of a Naval Depot side at Blandford I'ark lent interest to the competition. The players blended well and should provide, solid opposition to the other teams In the early game at Blandford Park Ponsonby was unfortunate to lose a man when the score with Comrades was equal, and, although it battled hard with 10 players, Comrades prevailed by two clear goals. The main attraction was between Naval Depot and Eastern Suburbs. The Navy men used loner passing methods better arid about the middle of the spell had worked up an understanding which the Suburbs defence found hard to counter. The half-time score was 3—o in favour of Naval Depot. Gisby, an ex-Eastern Suburbs player, proved destructive against his old club, scoring three goals in succession, while the sound work of Rutherford, Massev and Green in the middle line kept the attack going. Following were the scores and scorers:— Naval Depot, 4 (Gisby. 3, Massey), Eastern Suburbs, 0; Comrades, 5 (Fleet, 3, Fincham. Walters). Ponsonby, ii (Bell. Fussell. Callatrhan): Mount Albert. Grammar Old Boys. 11 (Wilkinson. 8. Thompson, Souter Hutchinson). North Shore, 1 (Richhrds); MetroCollege, 5 (Hannam, 2. A Woods. L, Woods. Lawson). Air Force, 1 (Walker).
