LARGE FORCE USED PLANES FROM SHIPS MUCH DAMAGE DONE (Becd. 1.-35 a.m.) LONDON, April '-'0 Much damage was done in the Allied attack on Sabang. Sumatra, which began at dawn yesterday. It was carried out by Allied fighters and bombers operating from air-craft-carriers, which were escorted by a powerful force of battleships, cruisers, destroyers and submarines. Direct hits were scqred on a power station, barracks, dockyard and a radio station, while a large airfield also was severely hit. Large fires were left burning in the town area and two Japanese merchant ships were hit. Escorting fighters shot down three Japanese bombers which approached the warships after the attack. One Allied plane was shot down into the sea, but the pilot was saved when an Allied submarine surfaced and took him aboard.
