LINERS DETAINED

ACTION BY TURKEY FRUSTRATING RUMANIANS (Reed. 7.30 p.m.) LONDON. April 20 The Turkish Government has detained two 7000-ton Rumanian liners, the Transylvania and the Bessarabia, which were about to leave for the Biac-k Sea. | reports the Times correspondent in ! Istanbul. Guards were placed aboard I the ships, and parts of the engines reJ moved to prevent the escape of the i vessels. The detention was justified on the I ground that the ships were about to be used as military transports, thereby acquiring the status of auxiliary ships, the passage of which through the Bosphorus is prohibited bv the Montreux Convention. It is believed that the Rumanians intended to use them in an attempt to rescue the remnants of their forces which are trapped at Sebastopol. The ships have been lying in Istanbul Harbour since the German attack 011 Russia in June, 1941. An Istanbul message broadcast by the 8.8.C. says the crews of two Rumanian liners, Bessarabia and Transylvania, anchored in the Bosphorus since Rumania declared war against Russia, have refused to obey orders to sail for Sebastopol. It is understood that the vessels were intended to sail on Monday night to assist in the evacuation of the Crimea.
