furlough weddings WALKER—JACKSON The marriage of Miss Alice Hughlings Jackson, youngest daughter of Mrs. J. H. Jackson and the late Mr. J. Hughlings Jackson, Remuera, to Lieutenant Henry Howard Walker, Second New Zealand' Expeditionary Force (on furlough), only son of Mr. and Mrs. A. Greville Walker, Mount Eden, took place Yesterday afternoon at St. Aidan's Church, Remuera. Canon R.. L. Connolly officiated. _ The bride was given away by ner uncle Mr. A. Horsley. She wore her mother's wedding dress of old parch-ment-coloured silk muslin, made with puffed sleeves and a very full gathered skirt Her veil of old Limerick lace was fastened by a coronet of real orangeblossom, and she carried a bouquet of cream chrysanthemums and pink carnations. There was no bridesmaid and the best man was Lieutenant B. losswill The reception after the ceremony was" held at the home of the bride s mother. CEREMONY AT MAP!TON St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Marton, was the scene of the wedding ou March 25 of Miss Joan Isabella Mary Williams, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Williams, of Marton, to Sergeant Eldon Clunie Drake (on furlough from overseas), eldest eon of Mr. and Mrs. Clunie Drake, of Maramarua. The Rev. J. Robertson officiated. The bride, who entered the church with her father, wore an unusual frock of white organdie, made with a high neckline and a long, full skirt and sleeves, and trimmed with scalloped trellis 'work around the sleeves, waistline and hem. Her tulle veil, apphqued with white satin daisies, was held in place by a coronet of orange blossom, ! and her bonqnct was of gladioli, carnations, tiger and dahlias. Tlio brido s sister. Miss I rsuhi Williains. and the bridegroom's sister, Miss Zoe Drake, who w ere bridesmaids, wore white georgette trucks with puffed sleeves, long tucked bodices and full skirts. Their bouquets were of red nerines, dahlias ami gerberas, and they wore horseshoes of red nerines on their hair. The best man was Private Bruce Gilraore and the groomsman was FlightSergeant Frank Lannox. A guard of honour was formed outside the church by R.N.Z.A.F. friends of the bridegroom. The reception was held at the Druids' Hall PLUNKET SOCIETY MEETING AT NORTHCOTE The 14th annual meeting of the Northcote sub-branch of the Plunket Society was held in the Returned Soldiers' rooms at Northcote .Mrs. Archie Campbell, the president, extended a welcome to a large gathering "f members and representatives of all the women's organisations in the district. Reports were given by the secretary and treasurer, Mrs. J. W. Lethbridge, and the Plunket nurse for Northcote, Miss J Barrett. A talk on Plunket work of the present day was given by Miss Helen Chapman, charge nurse at Auckland headquarters. A presentation was made to Mrs. Lethbridge in appreciation of her year's work, and occasion was taken to farewell Mrs. Keith Holdgate. who was presented with a large sheaf of flowers in Plunket colours. Supper was served by the committee at the end of the evening. Anions; the guests were the Mayoress of Northcote, Mrs. E. C. Fowler; Mrs. H. Burrel! and Mrs. G. Matthews, president, and Mrs. Nicks, secretary, Takapnna sub-branch; Mrs. Dickson, of Sydney. | TRANSIT HOUSE CLUBROOM OPENED Comfortable easy chairs, jars of chrysanthemums and dahlias and colourful rugs on the polished floor have transformed what was originally the sewing room at Transit House into a ' "osy clubroom, which was opened yesterday afternoon for the use of members of the Happiness Club when they wish to forgather with friends in town. About 250 guests afterward assembled for afternoon tea at the Farmers' Tearooms, where the director of the club, Miss Edith Sutherland ("Joan"), presided. In addressing the gathering Miss Sutherland mentioned that during her term of office about £BOOO had been raised by the club for charitable purposes, and she paid a warm tribute to the members whose hard work had resulted in such a notable achievement. During the afternoon a musical programme was given, including several items by the Happiness Club's new choir under Mr. R. Morgan. PACKERS BREAK RECORDS "The work done by our Auckland women during the last few days constitutes such a record that I really do feel proud to be associated with them," said the Mayoress, Mrs. J. A. C. Allum, last, night. She went on to explain that within the last three days the women's activities sub-committee of the Auckland Metropolitan Patriotic Committee, which includes helpers from various organisations, had packed_ 10,000 parcels for despatch to servicemen overseas. This involved unloading cases of goods sent bv various firms, packing the individual parcels and reloading them into cases, which, with some kindly masculine assistance, had then to be nailed and wired. The work has, in fact, been done so quickly that there is now no need of the helpers whose aid was to have been given and was expected to be necessary to-day and Saturday ENGAGEMENTS Roid—Gori-ie.—Mr. and Mrs. Alan R.
