Marketing Division states that potatoes from all parts of New Zealand will be permitted to reach Wellington markets after to-morrow. During the past month, transportation to Wellington and Hutt cities has been restricted bv rail and sea except for supplies grown in adjacent areas, such as Levin, Hawke's Bay and Nelson.

The transportation order ensuring this was issued on March 17 at the request of the Potato Marketing Advisory Committee, which represents growers, merchants and Government agencies, and which had been asked by the Hawke's Bay Primary Production Council to devise a means to enable Hawke's Bay potato growers to dispose quickly of their potato crop. Flood weather, it was stated, had made Hawke's Bay potatoes unsuitable for long keeping, although of good immediate quality. The Hawke's Bay Grain and Produce Merchants' Association lias advised that this temporary reservation of the Wellington market to their clients has practically cleared all these stocks. Supplies reaching Wellington have proved sufficient, and no congestion has been reported elsewhere through potatoes being unduly diverted to other centres from growers who would normally have supplied Wellington. These growers have had no difficulty in disposing of their crops to other North Island districts or for overseas military purposes. This is the second occasion on which this means of preventing a temporary glut likely to affect winter supplies has been employed. During last summer a similar transportation order held the better keeping stocks off the city markets until certain districts where keeping quality had been injured by excessive hot weather had disposed of their production.
