ELLERSLIE TRAINING FORTUNE'S SMILE GOES WELL BY ARCHER An attractive seven furlongs in 1.30 by Fortune's Smile (Hunter) was the outstanding gallop at Ellerslie yesterday, when some interesting; work was performed in preparation for the Avondale Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting on Saturday. The disappointing Belle Renarde (Hunter) was responsible for the best half-mile when she recorded 49 l-6s. The galloping took place on the No. 1 grass and the going was soft after rain the previous day. There was a dense fog when the gates opened and it was impossible to time some of the early workers, which included Te Hinemoa. Exeter and Olga's Pal. Te Hinemoa appears to have come through her races at the Easter meeting without any ill-effects and should strip in good order for the Foley Memorial Handicap on Saturday. Fortune's Smile went very fast in the early part of his gallop, and, after running the first three in 38s, ran on strongly to complete the seven furlongs in 1.30. He seems to be improving with every race. Neenah jumped away in front and had no difficulty in leading Beau Leon over six furlongs in 1.18 4-5. Neenah is very bright and muscular Expanse and Town Survey beat Aguilo over seven furlongs in 1.31 3-5. Expanse looks improved after his Easter racing and Town Survey is also very well. Belle Renarde went with a lot of dash over four furlongs in -19 l-ss. She is a very free worker, but her form in public has fallen far short of expectations. It should not be for lack of condition if she fails to race well on Saturday, as she is full of muscle. Red Warden (C. Markwick) easily beat Harris Tweed (B. Markwick) over seven furlongs in 1.81 3-5. He is another good track galloper who has proved a disappointment. Mercurial and Tiger Tan sprinted four furlongs in 49 4-os, They finished together with little between them. Mercurial going nicely for a maiden. Mercurial is in the Dominion Handicap on Saturday. Other gallops were:— Four Furlongs.—Transmitter beat Home James, 51s; Phaleron Sign and Vcrus, 50 4-ss; Lord Dink, 50 3-ss; Saffron Walden beat Blueberry, 525• Dinky Di and Eslnonde, 49 4-ss.

SHOCK FOR BUYERS HORSES TO STAY IN SYDNEY (Reed. 11.35 p.m.) SYDNEY, April 13 The yearlings, bought at the record sales this week cannot be taken away from Sydney by rail or road. This announcement to-dav by the Minister of Transport. Mr. Ward, * provided a shock for buyers. Thirty highpriced yearlings had been sold to Melbourne buyers, including the 2100 guineas Ajax colt. "No provision whatever is being made to transport any of these yearlings either within the State or between States," said Mr. Ward. Special provision was made to enable yearlings bred in the country to be brought to Sydney for the sales so that there would be no discouragement of breeding. However, the condition was laid down that the yearlings could not be taken away from Sydney again and must be raced here. There will be strict policing of the transport regulations to ensure that there is no infringement. .Anyone attempting to get horses to Melbourne by road or rail will be liable to prosecution.
