CADET CONTESTS

IMPROVED standards AUCKLAND SCHOOL'S SUCCESS Marked success has been obtained by boys of Auckland Grammar School in annual district and national cadet competitions which have so far been judged. Schools generally throughout the Northern Military District have attained a higher standard of efficiency jn the various competitions than has been the case in recent years."' With a score of 78.8 points the Auckland Grammar School team won the Jforth Island section of the Weekly Press Challenge Shield competition for rifle shooting. First for the Dominion w as the winning South Island team from Nelson College which obtained 81 points. There were 22 entries from the Northern Military District, the second team for the district being Seddon jjeniorial Technical College with a score 0 f 76 points. The Daughters of the Empire Cup, competed for annually by secondary school cadets from the Northern Military District, was also won bv Auckland Grammar School, with Whangarei High School a close second, and Tnujnarunui High School third. This is tlio second year in succession that Auckland Grammar School has won this trophy, Tvhich is awarded for cadet battalion efficienrv under a number of headings. Auckland Grammar School was first and Whangarei High School second in the contest for the Kate McCosh Clark Cup. Competed for by Bren gun teams of fire cadets, the competition was reeved this year after a lapse of seven years. J. F. Rawhnson, of Pukokohe High School, with 94 points, was first in the contest for the Logan Campbell medals which is judged on individual marksmanship during the annual classification shooting by school cadets. B. W. Arkinstall. of Auckland Grammar School, with 93 points, was second, and Jl. K. Nash, of Sacred Heart College, with 92, was third. Commenting upon the high standard of cadet efficiency and marksmanship attained this year in the Northern Military District, an officer said vesterday that it was a tribute not only to the work of the officers and non-commis-fioned officers, but also to the enthusiasm of" the cadets.

SERVICE AWARDS AUCKLANDERS DECORATED 'AIRMEN AND SOLDIER Awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Acting Flight-Lieutenant John Douglas Henderson is the son of Mr. and Mrs. F. Henderson, of Murdoch Road, Grey Lynn. Acting Flight-Lieu-tenant Henderson is a»ed 25 and was educated at Richmond Road School and Seddon Memorial Technical College. Leaving New Zealand in 1941, lie gained his commission in Canada and subsequently joined a Lancaster squadron in England as navigation officer. He has taken part in raids over Italy and Germany.

Another recent recipient of the Distinguishecl Flying Cross is Flying-Officer N. B. Blakey, only son of Mr. and Mrs. B. C. Blakey, of 41 Turama Road, Onelmnga. Aged 27, Flying-Officer Blakey was educated at Auckland Grammar School and Auckland University College, subsequently being appointed to the staff of Kawakawa District High School. He left New Zealand in March, 1942. and has completed his first tour of' operations.

Private Mervyn Herbert Crockett, *ho has been awarded the Military Medal, is the only son of Mrs. E. Crockett, of 72 Taupata Avenue, Point Chevalier. Private Crockett, who is aged 24, wa.s educated at the Richmond Road and Wcstmere Schools. He .took part in the lighting from El Alamein to Tunis.
