HOLIDAY WORK
VALUE OF STUDENTS
THE CALL TO TEACHERS. The effect which the direction of student labour had had on the stair position at Westfield was refeired to by the manpower ofiicer, Mr. C. G. S. lillis. yesterday. He said that without the students the filling of the stall requirements in the freezing industry would have appeared hopeless. "These students have greatly eased the position in this'industry, which is making an unprecedented demand tor labour," said Mr. Ellis. "The food definitely must be handled as expeditiously as possible, and the Controller of. Manpower lias given the mdustij first priority as tar as the direction o student labour is concerned. inc students have responded admirably to the position and they are to be commended for the splendid effort they are making. One of the most important points is that they are doing the job very willingly, and that means a great, deal when an increase in production is sought." Referring to the use of teachers in seasonal industries, Mr. Ellis said they would finish their school year on December 10, in the case of secondary schools, and December 17, in the case of primary schools. They would not be called on for seasonal work until January 3 unless they had volunteered to start earlier. The volunteers were now being given an opportunity to choose their work, as long as it was in one of the industries specified by the National Service Department. Training College students would also be called on January 3.
