"BATTLE FOR CRETE"
NEW WAR VOLUME The third of the popular illustrated relumes dealing with the exploits of the New Zealand Division in the MiddleEast. "Battle for Crete." has been compiled in the office of the official archivist of the Second N.Z.E.F. and has been published this week. Its predecessors were "Prelude to Battle,'' covering the first Libyan campaign, and "Campaign in. Greece." A fourth, now ready for printing, describes the fighting at Sidi Rezegh in November, 1941. Written at a stage when much information which will later find a place in the Official History may not be disclosed, the surveys are not claimed to he a complete and finally accurate picture of events, but they provide, in semi-permanent form, a valuable account of the various campaigns. The new one is well illustrated with photographs and sketch maps. SCHOOL ACCREDITING HEADMASTER'S APPROVAL (0.C.) HAMILTON. Thursday Ihe offer of the Education Department to appoint the Hamilton High School an accrediting school for university entrance was accepted hy the board of governors to-day. The headmaster, Mr. H. D. Tait, described the system as a good one. He said it would involve no further work for the staff than was done at present. He had carried out the method in theory for some years and found that it compared favourablv with the examination system, Tait pointed out that the customary examination fees would be charged. School leaving certificates could be sought after three years, and would serve for many classes °f employer, but matriculation could only be granted after four years in future. drowning inquest , After a verdict of death by drowning had been given by the district coroner, Mr. F. E. Cullen, at the inquest feld at Batlev on Tuesday afternoon in connection with the drowning of six schoolchildren in the Otamatea River, Mr. Han papa Paikea intervened with a request that a verdict of accidental drowning be returned, not Mr. T. P. Paikea. M.P., as was stated in the report of the proceedings. BREACH of probation Having failed to comply with all the terms of his release on probation, Cyril Thomas Snowden, aged 33, was brought before Mr. Justice Fair yesterday for sentence for the theft of a suitcase and contents. Mr. G. S. R. Meredith appeared for the Crown. The probation officer, Mr, J. Anderson, said accused was released on probation on August 26, and on November 12 he was sentenced by a magistrate to three months' imprisonment wtih hard labour for the theft of four gallons of benzine. His Honor said accused had refused to take the opportunity given him of living honestly, and he would now be sentenced to six months' imprisonment, t° be concurrent with his present sentence.
