NELSON, Tuesday After a period of changeable conditions the warm, dry weather of the past week has matured the early pea crops on the Waimea plain and there is a danger that some will waste through lack of pickers. Over 100 volunteer workers left Nelson city by bus this morning to work in the fields Double the present total available could be employed at present. The vagaries of the weather have inado anything like gradation of picking almost impossible. While peas are selling in Nelson shops at 2s 6d a peck, Mr. L. F. Berkett. the well-known trotting owner and trainer at Hope> 10 miles away, advertised to-day inviting anyone who wished to help themselves to free green peas to bring out their buckets and bags. He has_ over 30 acres, most of which are ready tor picking and some over-mature.
