STATE'S WINDFALL

MANY DEPOSITS LOST TOTAL OF 127 CANDIDATES On the provisional results of the election 127 candidates, or over 40 per cent of the number nominated throughout the Dominion, will forfeit their deposits of £lO, representing a gain to the Treasury of £1270. Deposits are forfeited by those who obtain less than a quarter of the number of votes polled by the successful candidate. In the 1938 election, when the issue was virtually a straight-out contest, only eight candidates lost their deposits. in this election there were 13 different party and other affiliations, but, except for the two main parties, the majority of the candidates fared badly. Of the 53 candidates nominated by the Democratic Labour Party, 52 will pay the forfeit, Mr. J. A. Lee, the leader, being the only candidate to poll sufficient votes to retain his deposit. In none of the European electorates will any candidate nominated by either the Labour or National Parties lose his deposit. The candidates who will lose their deposits are: —

REPLY TO SYMPATHISERS LONDON, Sept. 120 Mr. Bernard Shaw, advertising in the personal cohmins of London newspapers, makes an omnibus reply to "the prodigious mass of letters" sympathising with him on the recent death of his wife. He assures his and his wife's friends that "the very happy ending to a very long life has left him awaiting his own turn in perfect serenity." USED ENVELOPES "Is this show hard up?" Mr. E. S. Parker demanded at a meeting of the Marlborough Power Board. "We get our notices in old second-hand envelopes. It costs more to paste on new fronts than it's worth. The la.wyers and the power boards seem the only mean ones." Mr. A. H. Nees said he objected too. "When I get the board's envelopes I just canH use them again," he said. Mr. Parker added that the Borough Council sent out its notices in new envelopes. "But aren't they an extravagant crowd?" the chairman inquired, innocently. The secretary explained that the practice of reusing envelopes was adopted to be in line with the Government's policy of economy.
