WOMAN'S WORLD

NO CHILD REFUSED RESIDENTIAL NURSERY The executive committee of the Auckland Residential Nursery Society held a very pleasant party on Saturday afternoon in the church hall in Ngauruhoo Street, Mount Eden. By invitation of the Mayoress, Mrs. J. A. C. Allum, president of the society, all the members and friends of the subcommittees were given the opportunity to meet and discuss the society's first year of work. Mrs. Alllnii stated that during the first 10 months of the year 223 children had passed through the nursery, 56 of them being under one year of age. She particularly emphasised the fact that, no matter what the financial position of the parents might be, no child would be refused admission to the nursery if there was room for it to be taken in. She wished to make this point quite clear because there appeared to have been some misunderstanding about it in the past. The officers of the various committees reported that their members were working hard for the society, and that they all had funds in hand which would be handed to the treasurer before the end of the financial year in August. The Rernuera sub-committee of the society held a very successful bridge party yesterday afternoon at the home of Mrs. R. B. Wilson, Garden Road, Rernuera. The proceeds, augmented by the sale of flowers, sweets and cakes, reached the sum of £32 for the Residential Nursery Society's fund. RESERVE DISBANDING At a meeting of the Auckland centre .of the Women's National Reserve, presided over by the president, Mrs. 11. R Hesketh. it was agreed that the affairs

of the centre be lyound up and that the sum of money in hand be donated to the New Zealand Returned Services' Association, Auckland, for the benefit of servicemen's wives and families in need. The decision to disband was taken because many members of the reserve have been called upon to give their services to various war activities and its work is now overlapped by more recently formed organisations. GIRL MUSICIAN SCORES An 18-year-old musician, Miss Zita Austin, formerly of Auckland, now of Wellington, has been advised that she is the New Zealand winner of the 1942 Empire Overseas Scholarship. Miss Austin gained her A.T.C.L. and L. i\C. for both violin and piano at the age of 16, and last year she won the Schubert Scholarship (violin).
