NOTABLE CONTRIBUTION A LINK WITH LIDICE A New Zealand challenge to the Nazis who razed the village of Lidice, in Czechoslovakia, last year is reflected in a notable contribution to Auckland s share of the Third Liberty Loan. Residents of the small community of Pulioi. near Warkworth, some of whose ancestor-' came from Lidice, have subscribed £2156 10s. I'ulioi was settled 80 years ago by pioneers from Bohemia. In commenting upon the amount raised tor the loan a correspondent, in a letter to the editor of the 11 KitAl.i>, states that: his own parents were among those who came From Lidice. The harsh rule and conditions of the time caused his people to migrate, he states. Offered by the Navy Department lor breaking np. she iias been acquired by a salvage company. The llineinoa is actually 67 years old but for a number of years she lay idle at Wellington, and later at Stewart Island. With her clipper bow and raking masts and funnel, she was for many years the pride of those who sailed in her. The llineinoa arrived in Now Zealand i'n 187(3, having heen ordered in the previous year under Sir Julius Vogel's £10,000,000 public works loan. Her builders were Scott and Company, Greenock. It was the IJinemoa which rescued the crew of the barque Spirit of the Dawn, which went ashore on Antipodes Island in 1893. Twelve years later she rescued the crew of the French ship Anjou, which had been stranded on Auckland Island, and two years later she discovered the crew of the Dundonald on Auckland Island after the men had succeeded in making the perilous crossing from Disappointment Island, on which the Duudonald was wrecked*
