CLOSING OF SEASON PARNELL WINS KNOCK-OUT The Auckland Cricket Association's 1942-43 season was brought to a conclusion on Saturday afternoon, when the knock-out competition final at Eden Park was won by Parnell, which defeated Eden-Ponsonby-Balmoral by 45 runs. The outstanding batsman was the young Auckland representative, B. Sutcliffe, who scored 81 for Parnell. TEAM An exciting finish between M.T.P. and Manukau at the Domain on Saturday afternoon brought to a conclusion the knock-out competition controlled by the Auckland City and Suburban Cricket Association. The Army eleven beat Manukau, which won the senior championship, in the last over of the day. It was-a surprif-e victory, but a popular one. M.T.P. started badlv, three wickets falling for 11 runs. However, J. Ellis, 41, and R. Avery, 36, were associated in a splendid partnership which eventually carried the score to 1-12. Ellis hit five fours and one six. Manukau's opening pair, A. Dunning and J. Wilson, made 62. Wilson 'eventually scored 64. which was a good effort. Wickets fell fast at one stage, and the Manukau batsmen tried hard to check the attack. The tail failed badly, and in the bad light Manukau was dismissed for 130. A. Essex, four for 32, and R. Skinner, two for 20, bowled well for M.T.P. In a match between Brixton and a combined team, the latter proved too strong. Brixton compiled 152 for four wickets, and the combined eleven scored 202. H. Simpson gave a splendid display for 91. F. A good display of Rugby by the M*nukau and Marist junior teams was watched with interest by the servicemen, who displayed curiosity regarding the various rules of the game. A troupe of Maoris, among whom were prominent footballers, entertained the gathering with hakas and a typical Maori display. A baseball game between two teams of Servicemen was fast, and thrilled the crowd.

HAMILTON, Sunday Inter-house sports, games, and drill, and the Air Training Corps athletic championships were held in the Hamilton High School grounds in fine weather yesterday afternoon. There was a large attendance. Prior to the sports meeting the A.T.C. units and the inter-house teams, led by pipe bands, marched from Garden Place through Victoria and Ward Streets. The salute was taken by the Mayor. Mr. H. D. Caro, and Squadron-Leader P. K. Fowler. The contest for Miss Waikato was won by Miss D. LEAGUE CODE TRIALS A second series of trial matches was conducted by the Auckland Rugby League at Carlaw Park on Saturday afternoon, nine clubs taking part. In the principal match, Otahuhu put up a fine showing against Manukau, winner of last year's championship. Otahuhu led almost throughout, and was only overtaken a few minutes before time. Good forward work by both teams was a feature of the game. The play of Otahuhu was very impressive, and it was only the more experienced Maori players which carried the day. Otahuhu led at halftime by 15 points to 13, and the final score was: Manukau, 2<i; Otahuhu. 23. A fast, open game was witnessed in the curtain-raiser between Ponsonby and Newton. Newton had a comfortable lead at one stage, but Ponsonby won with superior combination. On No. 2 ground, a strengthened City thirteen defeated North Shore comfortably. Marist and Mount Albert played an interesting trial, won by the latter, which included A. Mclnnarney, the New Zealand five-eighths, who did not play last season.
