MINISTER TO WASHINGTON

Had Mr. Nash not postponed his return slightly because of Mr. Anthony Eden's visit to Washington, he would probably have been in New Zealand by now. Yet there is no word as to who is to do duty for him in New Zealand's Ministry to the United States. Ilis stay in New Zealand will certainly be prolonged. The Prime Minister has announced that Mr. Nash will introduce the Budget, an event that will fall after May 19, the date of Parliament's resumption.. The popular expectation is, however, that Mr. Nash will remain in the Dominion to help fight the general election later in the year, Such a programme would still further prolong his absence from his vital mission to the United States. The New York Times says, furthermore, that it is questionable whether Mr. Nash will return to Washington. Still there is no announcement of who will deputise for Mr. Nash during a prolonged absence, or who is to succeed him if he is, in fact, relinquishing the Ministry. Such a key position should not be left unoccupied, except by minor officials. The adequate representation of New Zealand in Washington, of her viewpoint and war needs, is absolutely vital. Except for London, no overseas post is more important. Mr. Eraser recognised the fact when he sent his ablest lieutenant to America. It is wrong that such a mission should be on account of political considerations. In this matter, New Zealand is placed a bad second to party politics. The fault should be corrected without delay. Mr. Eraser must see that New Zealand is properly represented while Mr. Nash is absent from Washington. If his absence is to bo permanent, a successor of fitting rank and capacity should be found at once.
