AUCKLAND CASUALTIES SOLDIER AND AIRMAN Reported died of wounds, Private Jlervyn Leslie Edwards was the son of Mr. Fred Edwards, of Hamilton, and the foster son of Mr. and Mrs. Bert Branch, of 9 Earle Street, Parnell. He was 2S and before his enlistment was employed by the Post and Telegraph Department. Private Edwards left Now Zealand with an early reinforcement.
Reported missing on operations, Flight-Sergeant W. E. Gibbos is tlie son of Mrs W. E. Orsborn, of 2 Hataitai Flats, Brighton Road, Parnell. He is 29 and is an old boy of the Auckland Grammar School. Ho left New Zealand in November, 1941, and has been on operations for a considerable time.
SLY GROG SALES YOUTH OF SEVENTEEN Two charges of selling liquor without a licence were preferred against a 17-year-old factory hand, George William Kelly, before Mr. J. H. Luxford, S.M., yesterday. Accused pleaded guilty. Sub-Inspector Macnamara said that following complaints Sergeant Adams and Constable Keogan saw accused at a city corner with a noted sly grogseller. Accused was pursued and when caught admitted making sales of wine for 15s a bottle on March 17 and March 19. He had been employed by another inan. ' Accused was remanded to appear on Friday, when the probation officer will ! submit a report. , DEFAULTERS CHARGED DETENTION ORDERED Charged with failing to report for a medical examination Kenneth Sydney Billings, aged 18, pleaded guilty before Mr. J. H. Luxford, S.M., yesterday. Sub-[nspector Macnamara said thataccused was a conscientious objector, and had been greatly influenced by his father, who was a conscientious objector in the last war. Accused was ordered to be sent to a defaulters' camp. After serving six weeks' imprisonment for failing to report, Charles Arthur Marcus Kirk refused to comply with a lawful order to accept and wear battledress, said Mr. Macnamara. Accused, who said he was opposed to war, was convicted and ordered to be detained in a defaulters' camp. PRISON FOR MAORIS Two Maoris, John Tahana, labourer, aged 20, and Jack Brown, labourer, aged 23, pleaded guilty to the theft of an attache case and contents valued at £'2, before Mr. J. H. Luxford, S.M., yesterday. Tahana also admitted the theft of a screw-driver valued at ss. Senior-Detective Walsh said tho accused. who had been convicted of previous olfences, were making a nuisance of themselves and were a pair of blackguards. « Accused were sentenced to three months' imprisonment each. On the charge of stealing the screw-driver Tahana was convicted and discharged SENTENCE OF DEATH (0.C.) APIA. March 2 During a family quarrel at Safauta, Savai'i, a native was assaulted and so severely injured that he died in the hospital. His assailant, Tapuseu Ese, was arrested and charged with murder at the Apia High Court. At tho conclusion of the trial accused was sentenced t<; death by Judge Herd, COAT STOLEN BY MAORI '(O.C.) Senior-Sergeant A. Henderson said that the complainant, a taxi-driver. *'fts engrged by some Maoris, including Rikora, to drive them to Portland. On returning to Whangarei his overcoat and a trouble lamp were missing. "Accused said the reason he took the overcoat wan that the taxi-driver charged too much for the trip to Portland," added the senior-sergeant. "The trouble ' a mp han not been located."
