MANY NOMINATIONS SEVERAL PRESENT WAR MEN The keen interest in returned servicemen's affairs over recent months is reflected in the numerous nominations for the executive officers of the Auckland Returned Services Association. Among them are several men who have returned from service with the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force. The retiring president, Mr. ■). W. Kendall, is not seeking re-election and three nominations have been received for the vacancy. PRICE BREACH CHARGE FOR POTATOES COURT GRANTS REHEARING (0.C.) HAMILTON, Friday Alter a Huntlv grocer had been lined in the Hamilton Police Court to-da.v for making an excessive charge for a supply of potatoes to a Maori the lignres submitted lor the prosecution were questioned, and an application for a rehearing was made. The grocer was George Mclnally, who admitted a breach of the Price Tribunal order respecting a supply of B£cwt. of seed potatoes to a Maori. Mr. 11. T. Gillies, Crown Prosecutor, said that on the figures given in his instructions the customer was overcharged £4 5s lid. Mr. W. .J. King, for the defence, said that defendant had not been notified of the price order, The purchase price for seed potatoes was £'l7 10s per ton, plus freight, profit and other charges, and 10s for special delivery. Counsel admitted the overcharge and said that his figures worked out at 3s per hundred-weight more than should have been debited to the customer. The magistrate, Mr. S. L. Patcrson, said that all grocers should keep in touch with the Price Tribunal orders and strictly observe them. A fine of L'2o was imposed. After the case was closed Mr. King referred to it again, and questioned whether the figures submitted by the Crown Prosecutor were correct. The magistrate agreed to grant a rehearing next Friday, and said the matter put before the Court for the prosecution was not at nil .satisfactory, and that the prosecution had hotter come to the Court next week properly prepared to prove the ease. AUCKLAND PROSECUTIONS VARIOUS FINES IMPOSED Seven persons or firms were charged before Mr. F. M, Levien, S.M., yesterday, with breaches of the Price Regulations. Mr. Clea! prosecuted. For selling commodities at prices not conforming with the current price orders, Victor Kennedy Simpson, butcher, of 85 Karangahape Road, Woolworths (N.Z.), Limited, of Karangahape Road (Mr. Drummond). Robert Reekie, grocer, of Titirangi (Mr. Wallace), the Fanners' Trading Company, Limited, New North Road, Mount- Albert (Mr Drummond), and George Ainsworth. grocer, of Totara Avenue, New Lynn, were each fined £2O For a price breach in respect of unvarnished chairs, John Stanley Bell, of 191 Ponsonby Road (Mr.-Inder). was fined £25. For failing to display prominently a copy of a price order the defendant; Simpson was fined £2 10s and the defendant Ainsworth £1 ]os. All the defendants either pleaded guilty or made no appearance. David Hutton, fruiterer, of 1 Queen Street (Mr. Woods), pleaded guilty to a charge of failing to display a copy of a price order in a part of his shop where potatoes were being sold. A fine of £2 10s was imposed. FISH DYNAMITED (0.C.) _ NOUMEA, March 0 Accidents caused by dynamite, usually to people who choose this illegal method ol killing fish, are distressingly frequent in New Caledonia, and one-armed men who have been maimed in this fashion aro, to be seen up and down both coasts. In the past week or two an 18-year-old boy has lost his right hand, and another civilian has suffered injuries much more severe. Both were exploding dynamite among fish. NOTE ISSUE IN NOUMEA (0.C.) NOUMEA, March fj The first issue of 250,000 francs worth of Noumea treasury notes to replace two franc, one franc and 50 centimes coins having proved insufficient owing to increased circulation demand plus souvenir mania on the part of Allied troops, a second issue is being prepared of a total value of a million francs. There will be 200,000 two-franc notes, and 400,000 each valued at one franc and 50 (•entimes. French shoppers hope that, as a result of this new issue, they will now be able to obtain their correct change. RULES FOR LEGISLATORS LOS ANGELES.
