RETURN FROM MIDDLE EAST SICK AND WOUNDED ARRIVE (P.A.) MAIL SERVICE WANTED NEEDS OF POUTO DISTRICT (0.C.) DARGAVILLE, Friday Proposals for a rural mail service twice weekly for settlers in the Pouto area, 49 miles from Dargaville, by the extension of the existing mail and goods contract service now connecting Tangaibi with Dargaville, 27 miles, were discussed at a conference convened by the county chairman, Mr. E Wordsworth. Mr. Wordsworth explained that the county had asked for a grant of £6OOO from the Government with which to complete the metalling of the road from Tangaibi to Pouto, 22 miles. The Government- had made a grant of £750. which the county council had subsidised with £250. The amount was now being spent, but would only be sufficient to metal the worst sections of the road. Mr. C. Clark, Chief Postmaster at Auckland, said his department would not be interested unless the road was met ailed. Resolutions were carried urging that a combined goods mail and passenger service bo extended from Tangaibi to Pouto on two days a week, that the road to Pouto be metalled at the earliest possible moment and that representations be made through the member for the district, the Rt. Hon •T. G. Coates. GAOL FOR DEFAULTER APOLOGY NOT SUFFICIENT An apology was offered by James William McCarthy when be pleaded guilty before Mr. J. H. Luxford. S.M., yesterday, to charges of failing to report for medical examination and failing to notify his change of address. Remarking that an apology was not sufficient explanation, the magistrate sentenced accused to six weeks' imprisonment,. MAN NOT ENROLLED Charged with employing a man who had failed to enrol for military service. Albert Bea/.ley. builder, pleaded guilty before Mr J. IT. Luxford. S.M. vesterday A statement was made that defendant bad been tricked with " false certificate, lie bad shown tb<» man's name on all his returns to th<> manpower authorities A fine of l''' was imposed.
