THEFTS BY CARPENTER

MONEY AND CHISEL "Anything in the way of sneak thieving from one's own mates cannot be tolerated. Nothing is more disturbing than sneak thieving from pockets around a job," said Mr. J. H. Luxford, S.M., yesterday when Leslie Morris Cook, a carpenter, aged 26, married (Mr. Alderton), admitted the theft of 4s and of a wood chisel valued at 2s 6d. A number of petty thefts had been reported during a period of six weeks on a construction job where accused was employed, and accused came under suspicion, said Detective-Sergeant Trcthewey. When interviewed, accused admitted taking the money from two sets of clothing. He was earning between £lO and £l2 a week and in addition worked at the wharves during the week-end. It was a distressing case, said Mr. Alderton. Accused had been making desperate efforts to pay off his furniture in order to leave his wife out of debt when he went to camp. He had worked on the wharves during the Labour week-end apparently without sleep. A fine of £7 was imposed. DESTROYED BY FIRE (0.C.) HAMILTON, Wednesday A two-roomed dwelling owned by Mr. Ji. Jones was destroyed by fire in Fox Street, Hamilton East, last night. The cottage was outside the Fire Board's area, and little could be done to save it.
