RUGBY FOOTBALL

CLOSING OF SEASON

AUCKLAND DEFEATS, NAVY

The 1042 Rugby season in Auckland was brought to a conclusion on Saturday afternoon when two matches were played at Eden Park in the presence of a fair attendance of spectators. The principal game was that between an Auckland fifteen and the Navy, the former winning by 40 points to 14. Although there was such a big difference between the scores, the play was interesting to watch, on account of the fact, that it was always fast and open. The Auckland team threw the ball about in great style, Paton, the fullback, sometimes starting rushes from his own goal-line. Sorenson, the representative fullback, played at first five-eighths and gave a good exhibition. Auckland's team combination was too good for the opposition, as was demonstrated by the fact that the wing-threequarters scored seven tries between them. Although the Navy forwards were much lighter than their opponents they kept going well right to the end. Barry, former Auckland representative, and Torrie played particularly good games, while Sellers (centre) and Webster (fullback) were the best, backs. Rosenfeldt (4), Boggs (3), M. Smith (2) and Rae scored tries for Auckland. Sorenson converted three and Paton potted a goal. Mauukau defeated an Army fifteen in the curtain-raiser by 12 points to 7. Boryer (2) and Eetherington scored for Manukau and Boryer kicked a penalty goal. Evans scored for Army and Porter potted a goal.

MATCH IN PRISON CAMP WIN FOR NEW ZEALANDERS (0.C.) HAMILTON, Sunday New Zealand prisoners of war in Stalag Luft. 111. recently defeated a Welsh Rugby fifteen from the same camp by 11 points to 0. The New Zealand team included:—Barks: K. Shearer, Te Kuiti A. G. Sutherland, Hamilton; H Kimberley, Nelson; K. A. Dunkly, Oamaru; T. Duffy, Featherston; N. Culpan. Auckland; E. McConchie, Wellington. Forwards: R. Boag, Hastings; Scott, Gisborne;

S. Murphy, Wellington; D. Pyman, Botorua A. Witton, Palmerston North; G. Sommervijle Raetihi; L. McCarthy, Wanganui; T. Scho field, Mnsterton.

The Welsh team included Evans, a schoolboy international, and Sladen. who represented Wales a few years ago. A spectator reports that the standard of play was equal to senior football to be seen anywhere in New Zealand. The forwards particularly played in real New Zealand style and were a treat to watch. Outstanding among the forwards were Scott, Pyman and Boag. Tries for New Zealand were scored by Duffy, Kimherly and Sutherland, the last one being converted. The Welshmen were outclassed in all departments. DOMINION ARMY SIDE BEATEN (Reed. 6.30 p.m.) LONDON. Oct. 11 In a Rugby match Rosslyn Park heat a New Zealand Army team by 26 points to ."> WRESTLING MATCHES The Town Hall was filled on Saturday evening when another programme was staged under the control of the Auckland Wrestling Association. In the principal professional bout Jim Dryden, former New Zealand amateur champion, powerfully built, and weighing 18st, made his first appearance against Lofty Blomffeld, 1 fist 4lb, the lattpr winning by two falls to one. A professional preliminary, between Wrs Crowther (United States) and F. Boric (Auckland), was won by the American, who had obtained a fall before both men were counted out while outside the ring. G. Moore beat R. Day by one fall in an amateur contest.

HOCKEY SEASON ENDS The Auckland hockey neason terminated on Saturday when Wesley defeated University, after playing extra time, to win the Kent Cup. A marked superiority in the Wesley half-line contributed materially to the team's victory. In the match between the Auckland representatives and The Rest, a fairly even game resulted in a win for the latter. The Auckland forwards lacked cohesion, while the greater pace of their opponents enabled them to penetrate the defence. The scores were: — Wesley, 1 (O. Rlaney), University, 0; The Rest, 3 (W. Spicer, 2, E. Archibald), Auckland, 2 (I. Wyatt). Ladles' Association.—Representative game: Auckland, 5, Waikato, 1. Intermediate knockout final: Technical, 2, Wesley, 0. Junior knock-out: Mount Albert, 4, Y.W.C.A., 0.
