MATAMATA, Sunday The Matamata Farmers' Union, after hearing an address on the Emergency Precautions Service local ox-ganisation by the Mayor of Matamata, Mr. A, E. Wrigley, who spoke as chief warden, decided unanimously to give enthusiastic support to a district scheme for setting up women's committees of practical workers under their own wardens on the same lines as the men. It was also
decided to urge compulsory registration of all women between the ages of 17 and 45 years under the E.P.S. ajid/or the Women's War Service Auxiliary. It was pointed out that in one district, Te Poi, in the case of an emergency 32 farmers would have to leave their milking herds and that, although there were 200 members of the Women's War Service Auxiliary, every one was already attached to some specialist branch. There were nine other districts, so that the great need for increased numbers was evident. ELLERSLIE FASHIONS The timely decision of women racegoers to conform to practical and com-mon-sense dressing that combined smartness with utility was apparent on the concluding day of the Auckland Racing Club's Winter Meeting at Ellersue on Saturday. Bright sunshine with an exhilarating tang in the air favoured the choice of trim tailored suits worn with a high-necked jumper iu gay relief tones. Black, blue, beige and soft grey alternated with tweeds, while accessories provided an individual note in their colourful details. Cosy top-coats in distinctive designs added a seasonable touch, and fur coats, capes and shoulder stoles were worn with attractive effect.
