MAORI SOLDIER GAOLED WARNING BY MAGISTRATE Following a fracas near the Town Hall on Saturday, in the course of which Constable C. 0. Taylor received a fracture of the jaw, two soldiers appeared before Mr. J. H. Luxford, S.M., yesterday. They were Stuart Paki, aged 23, who was charged with assaulting Constable Butler in the execution of his duty and with obstructing Constable Taylor; and Frederick Walters, aged 29, charged with assaulting Constable Taylor, causing him actual bodily harm, and using indecent language. Paki was one of a number of Maoris making a nuisance of themselves by congregating on the footpath and using bad language, said Sub-Inspector Macnamara. Constable Taylor cautioned Paki for swearing and told him to move on. The crowd then became hostile. Constable Butler went for help and accused caught hold of Constable Taylor by the tunic. While they were struggling the accused Walters struck the constable on the jaw. Both men were arrested after Constable Butler returned.' "These cases are going to be dealt with severely," said the magistrate. Paki, who admitted the offences, was sent to gaol for a month. Walters was remanded until Thursday. A third Maori, Raymond Dickson, charged with disorderly behaviour while drunk at the scene, was fined 21s, in default 4 days' imprisonment. war"~pictures Over 5000 people have visited the exhibition of British war pictures in the Art Gallery, including 892 on Sunday.
