GUARDING MEMORIALS REMOVAL FOR DURATION THE LOGAN CAMPBELL STATUE To safeguard them against possible damage in the event of an enemy at- • tack, two well-known Auckland statues are to be removed for the duration of the war, and buried for safekeeping. They are the Sir John Logan Campbell memorial, in the reserve bordered by Campbell Crescent, One Tree Hill, and the much more recent statue of a Maori chief, erected *Oll the summit of One Tree Hill as part of the monument to the Maori race. Both will be buried near their present sites. Arrangements for the removal of the Logan Campbell memorial were made by the Cornwall Park trustees, and the statue was lifted from its pedestal yesterday. It will be re-erected after the war. The memorial was erected by the citizens of Auckland in honour of Sir John, and was completed before his death. The trustees of the Logan Campbell Estate plan to have the Maori chief's statue similarly removed in the near future. It was hoisted into position at the base of the granite obelisk on One Tree Hill 011 September 30, 1940, alter its arrival from England, where it was cast. No plans have been made for the removal of statuary in parks controlled by the City Council. TO-DAY'S FOOTBALL The senior championship of the Auckland Rugby IjEion will be commenced this afternoon, the principal attraction at Eden T Park being between C.R.O. and Air Force No. '2. Owing to the improved form of both teams a keen match is anticipated. The old rivals, (Richmond and Ponsonby, will contest the chief Rugby League match at Carlaw Park. Services teams will provide the main Soccer game at Blandford Park. The matches in all three codes will be commenced at 3 p.m. BOWLING CHAMPIONS Ponsonby Club. —Singles: R. Somerville; runner-up. A.
