HITLER AND LAVAL
FRENCH RESISTANCE LONDON, May 9 The growing revolt against Hitler and Laval was described at Liverpool by a Free French officer, says the British official wireless. He said: "Resistance to Hitler continues everywhere in France. The French people hate and despise the puppet Government.. France is not behind Laval, Darlan and Petain. General de Gaulle is recognised by the mass of French people as their leader. "To-day, there are 50 warships in the Free French Navy, and at the time of the armistice 700,000 tons of merchant shipping came to de Ganlle. Since then 110,000 tons have been sunk. There are 3000 Free French airmen and a large number of bombers and fighters. It is becoming more and more difficult for French people to get away from France to join de Gaulle. For every hundred who try, only four or five succeed. Hundreds cf Frenchmen have crossed the Channel by boat." The Germans have announced that five French hostages were executed in Paris and 50 others were sentenced to death for an attack on a German soldier on May 2. The Germans threatened to send 500 hostages to a workcamp in East Germany if the attackers were not discovered!.
