DEARER BEER
PRICES RISE TO-DAY PINT BOTTLE UP 2D AUTHORITY OF TRIBUNAL (0.C.) WELLINGTON, Sunday Increases in the retail price of beer of a penny a measure, 4d a reputed quart bottle and 2d a reputed pint bottle, are authorised by the Price Tribunal, according to an announcement issued yesterday. Riggers holding an Imperial quart will cost an additional 4Jd. The increases will operate to-morrow. The tribunal states that as the result of the new basic rate of excise duty of 3s a gallon and the raising of the sales tax from 10 to 20 per cent, it has been decided that, after allowing for a saving in brewery costs, the price to the retailer and reseller would be substantially higher than before and consequently the increase in the charges had been agreed on. Prices previously ruling for beer in Auckland were Is 5d a reputed quart bottle, 9d a reputed pint, 6d a handle of draught beer and 3d a half-handle. The increase in the price of a penny a measure is expected to apply to handles and half-handles or any such container. Riggers holding an Imperial quart which are usually the property of the consumer and are filled to take away, will bear an increase of 4Jd a quart as against the 4d increase on the reputed quart. These bottles are not common m Auckland. Reputed pint bottles of beer brought from southern centres to Auckland were previously priced at lOd.
