THE HOME GUARD
COMPULSORY POSTINGS 750 MEN TO DATE Approximately 750 men residing in Auckland and vicinity had been posted direct to the Home Guard under compulsory enrolment up to last night. Men being dealt with in this way are those who do not occupy positions of particular importance in the Emergency Reserve Corps or the Emergency Precautions Service, and who appear to be clearly available for immediate duty with Home Guard units.
It is anticipated that selection committees. on which the E.P.S. and the Home Guard are to be represented, will sit next week to consider the cases of men for whom both services may be deemed to have claims. A substantial number of men have put forward medical disabilities as unfitting them for Home Guard service. These cases, including those in which medical certificates or other evidence have been supplied, will also be considered by the selection committees, and where necessary by the Army medical authorities. It has been pointed out that, although a man may have been classed as medically unfit for the Army, ho may quite possibly be deemed fit for more limited duty in the Home Guard. The last day for the delivery of enrolment forms at post offices throughout the Dominion was yesterday. It is expected that when all are in hand the Auckland roll will contain a good many thousand names. Appeals against postings may be made to the < Auckland Manpower Committee, but it is too early to estimate how far this right will be exercised.
