However, there was a much improved turnover yesterday. The slackness was not due to market weakness but to a scarcity of. sellers. In virtually all sections buyers re-instated their preholiday bids, but holders had apparently tightened up and kept firm on raised limits. The gilt-edged clclss was as firm as ever, an exception being' provided by the 1052-55 4. per cents, which seemed a shade easier. At yesterday's calls there were buyers for 17 different issues of Government stock and only a single seller in sight, his offering being a parcel of 1054-58 4 per 4 cents at £IOB ss. With money plentiful and holders of existing Government stocks not disposed to sell, it is suggested that the Minister of - Finance might find the present a suitable time to place on the market the War Purposes Loan for which' advance subscriptions have been invited. A feature of general trading has been increased strength in insurances. A sale of South British yesterday at 55s marks a recovery of 8s in the last four weeks and is in line with values ruling in September last. Bank shares were steady, special attention being directed to New Zealands, which sold at 38s, a gain of 2s in the month. Dominion Industrials had a better and more widespread demand, although sales were few. WOOIyPACK INDUSTRY At the annual meeting of N.Z. Woolpack and Textiles, Ltd. (Foxton), the maximum dividend of 4 per cent was declared. The chairman of directors, Mr. A. W. Press, reported that a keen demand had set in for the phormium pack, but a shortage of green leaf was causing some concern. It was anticipated that production in 1042 would be reduced from this cause to 500,000 packs, instead of the estimated 900,000. GRAIN AND PRODUCE (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH. Friday Grain and produce markets during the week: have been on a parity with those of last week, with the exception of onions,' the market for which has eased slightly because of the arrival of the main crop. A shipment of onions was imule to Australia last week, but at present no advice has been received of any further sales. Because of a certain amount . of space becoming available the market for partridge peas has firmed slightly and they are now worth up to 6s on trucks for No. 1 quality for stations within a reasonable distance from Lyttclton. Other markets are unchanged. SYDNEY QUOTATIONS SYDNEY, April 17 Wheat in bulk is quoted at 3.11% a bushel; pollard, £6 a ton. Potatoes, Tasmanian, £l7 5s a ton. THE CITY MARKETS A wide variety of vegetables was offered at the City Markets yesterday. Although plentiful supplies of cabbage and cauliflower arrived for the preceding day's sale, they were in shorter supply, with prices advancing. Potatoes and kuniaras, in fair supply, sold at recent quotations. Lettuce, which has been scarce for the last few days, met with a keen demand. Carrots and swedes in heavy quantities sold at lower prices. Offerings of onions were fair and were more keenly sought than at last week's sale, i Plentiful supplies of dessert and cooking pears wore available. Lemons, which have been scarce for some days, were again offered. Choice tomatoes had a keen demand and values ruled high. More mushrooms came forward, with the quality inferior owing to the recent rain. Hothouse grapes had a fair inquiry, while those from Te Kauwhata, in short supply, brought higher prices.
