THE HOME GUARD
Sir —-The latest legislation in connection with the Home Guard will hearten many of us, who, for two years, have struggled against every kind of adversity to hold together units formed readily " enough - in the first place, which would never have been so difficult had the compulsory clause, now at long last a reality, been introduced with the founding of the movement. I know several guardsmen, particularly leaders, will share with me the sickening experience of constantly giving out vitality, enthusiasm and encouragement with all too little reaard from many of the indifferent members who availed themselves too often of the voluntary basis under which the movement for too long has laboured. All this, we hope, will now bo a thing of the past and the movement take the position it deserves—first place—instead of fishing, billiards, pic- . tures, etc., as has been the case. With the fulfilment of outstanding promises, too, I am confident this splendid movement will readily react to th® new lease of life being given it, though things are far from rosy yet in most units. Home Guardsmen won t be content until all fit men are compelled to pull their weight and leave their E.P.B. duties to men equally as useful, but unfit for Home Guard work. Latest regulations are certainly a step in the right direction, belated though it be. Lieutenant, H.G. Unit.
