THEATRE ADAPTATION
FILMS AT HIS MAJESTY'S A decision to insist on a number of precautions being taken by the owners of the building before His Majesty's Theatre might be used for the screening of films was made by the Auckland City Council last evening. Owing to the difficulty of obtaining sufficient engagements of the stage type, stated a report from the Works Committee, the owners wished to use the theatre for motion pictures. The proposal was to construct a bio-bos in the upper gallery, the materials to bo timber covered with cement-board and plaster—materials which did not satisfy the by-laws. The standard brick and concrete construction would involve structural difficulties, and, from the earthquake-risk point of view, it would be undesirable to add to the weight of an old building of that type at that height. The city engineer reported that the fire-risk would be sufficiently reduced if construction of the proposed bio-box wore made conditional on a number of further safety measures and on the understanding that it was for the duration of the war only and_ subject to the approval of the chief inspector of films.
