TENNIS TOURNEYS
[EVENTS HELD IN AUCKLAND JUNIOR COACHING SCHEME A report from the Single-Courts riubAssociation/presented to the meeting of delegates of the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association last evening showed that-the sub-associa-tions' , inter-club tournament had been completed. The Tiro Tiro club was successful in ootli grades and the Eureka club was runnerup in eacb instance. A very successful handicap tournament was .reported by the Auckland Association's handicap committee. In spite of adverse conditions, a slight increase of entries, compared ■with' the 'previous tourney, had been received The report commented on the success ol some of Mie - promising Juniors who competed. A recommendation that a charge for admission for the final day of the tournament he made in future was approved. A decrease in entries whs reported b.v the committee of ibe Auckland championship tournament. By severe curtailment of ex Ipenditure. a small profit <*as realised Ap preciaUve reference was made to the action of the caterer, Mrs Langioh, who had pro Tided ' meals for the committee, without charge, during both tournaments. It was decided to send a letter of thanks to SurgeonCommander Watson lor his presentation of trophies to the winner.- of the ladies'- doubles event The coachintt committee reported that £44 had already been expended in professional coaching at individual clubs and for junior groups. Mr. R. G. Armitage commented upon the very high standard of play shown by Juniors and intermediates at this season s ourneys, and claimed that this was the direct result of the association's coaching policy over the past few years The champion of champions competition ■will be suspended for the duration of the war. This was decided following the recommendation of the executive committee. It ■was agreed to hold the veterans' tournament as usual, provided sufficient entries were re ceived. A committee consisting of Messrs >C Reeder, J. S. Broun, A. C- Johns, J A Fernandez, T. E. Hickson and C. Bowler was appointed to control the tournament. The hard-court tournament will be held on the Easter dates at Windmill Road, but ibe men's titles will not be in i?sue. Messrs S. A. Cleal. R. G. Armitage, R. Dixon. I Kerr, C. Hill, J. A. Fernandez. G. Reid, T Stotter, J. S. Broun, C. Burgess and Dr K- M. Griffin were appointed a committer to control the tournament.
