Busy Week In Rotorua Rotorua has been experiencing a 1 fairly busy time during the annual bowling tournament of the Rotorua Bowling Club, in which 55 rinks participated. Boarding houses and hotels reported brisk business during the week. It is expected that with a race meeting next Saturday and the beginning of another bowling tournament next Monday good business conditions will continue. National Savings Total receipts in the national savings scheme in the Auckland area last week amounted to £11,549, which was an improvement of on the previous week. Individual sales of national savings bonds were better, and there was a steady flow of deposits from the 640 groups now operating. However, the result was still £.'3500 short of the amount allottee] to Auckland in connection with the weekly quota campaign to raise £5.000,000 in 12 months. Caring for the Troops "We have sent no fewer than 249 doctors and 400 nurses to care for our men who may be wounded in battle or may fall sick through the rigours of army life," said the Minister of Health, the Hon. A. H. Nordmeyer, last night in the course of a national broadcast on health services in wartime. The Minister said that those medical and nursing services were better equipped today than they had ever been for dealing with sicknesses that might betall our armed men. Early Sunday Tramcars Full use was made yesterday morning of the early tramcars which wore provided on all routes for the convenience of waterside workers finishing night duty and for the public generally. Officials of the Transport Board stated that the cars had been reasonably well patronised considering the hour. The inward trips on most lines drew more passengers, the majority being early churchgoers. The cars had fewer passengers on the return trips, but that is usually the case with the early trams any morning of the week. Gift of V.C.'s Revolver Claimed to have been carried by the famous Otago soldier Sergeant Dick Travis, V.C., when he was killed in the last war. a Webley service revolver has been given to the Otago military headquarters by Mr. J. I, Lethbridge, of Cromwell. In an accompanying letter Mr Lethbridge says: "I kept this weapon as a souvenir, and I had loaned it to Sergeant Travis, V.C.. and it was in his possession when he was killed. I was debited £.' i for it in my Army pav book, but I do not want anything for it." The revolver is in excellent condition and has been gratefully accepted by the military authorities. January's Weather The Dominion meteorologist says that in January, as in the three preceding months, there were no really settled spells, although occasional pleasant days were experienced. Cool, changeable conditions prodoniinated, the weather being frequently cloudy and at times humid. Well-distributed rain has given benefit to crops, which have shown good growth. Hay has been spoiled by the wet, and harvesting has suffered many delays, although a considerable quantity has now been stacked. Feed is plentiful, although rather soft in places. Stocks are in good condition and lambs are reported to have fattened well.
