DEFEAT IN CAIRO

THIRTEEN POINTS TO SIX

(N.Z.E.F. Official News Service) CAIRO, Feb. 1 In a Rugby football game that had bright patches and was even all the way, the New Zealand Sixth Brigade was beaten by 13 points to 6 by a team selected from the remainder of the Cairo area. The opposition included six New Zealanders and two South Africans. The New Zealanders fought gamely against superior backs, who combined and handled well. The winners took better advantage of their opportunities. The teams were as follows: — .Sixth Brigade.—L. T. Connon, J. P. Scanlan, W. H. Anglem, A. Jack, B. G. Thorburn, C. G. Rowe, J. Milligan, D. G. Miles, J. R. Brown., C. R. Slieppard, S. J. Dean, S. King, J. Dore, J. M. Chandler, and G. Lardeo. Cairo. —Blandford (New Zealand), Davis, Meyers (South Africa), Hatton (New Zealand), Jacobs, Haupt (South Africa), Cross, Powlesland, Joy, Passmore (New Zealand), Pyatt (New Zealand), Dean (New Zealand), Nelson (New Zealand), Jenkins, Graham. Meyers was the star Cairo back, scoring twice and making an opening for the third try. The New Zealand tackling was weak with the exception of Anglem, who went low every time. Cairo had a weight advantage in the forwards, but the New Zealanders were their match in the loose. Cairo's first try was a fine effort by Meyers, who intercepted in his own half, ran through, short-punted and raced over to score. Passinore converted. New Zealand missed two penalty chances. The forwards held off fierce Cairo attacks for a long time. Meyers organised the next trv, beating the opposition and sending Hatton over. The try was not converted, and at half-time Cairo led, 8 to 0. _ A forward rush, with Dean, Dore and Chandler prominent, put New Zealand on the attack. Rowe received from a scrum on the twenty-five line and went over, but lost .possession. However, Anglem, following up, scored. An easy kick was missed. The New Zealanders were putting up a great fight, but Cross and Blandford were keeping them back with fine kicking. Meyers scored again, following through fast. Passmore converted. New Zealand scored a minute later from good forward play. Scanlon's good following up bringing a try. The kick missed, and the game ended in Cairo's favour.
