"ARCH SCOUNDREL"
BOGUS NAVAL OFFICER 12 MONTHS' IMPRISONMENT SYDNEY, Jan. 9 Described by Mr. Arnold, S.M. V as "an arch scoundrel," Alan lan Ward Hunt, aged 40, engineer, was sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment at Central Police Court on four charges of having worn a naval uniform without lawful authority. It was stated that Hunt had pretended to have won the D.S.O. in the action against the "pocket" battleship Graf Spee, and that, although a married man with a child, he had written letters proposing marriage to young women in Sydney. Sergeant A. J. Patterson, of,the Military Police Intelligence, said he interviewed Hunt at Burton Street, Kirribilli, on August 21. When Hunt was questioned concerning allegations that lie had posed as a lieutenant-com-mander and engineer-commander in the Royal Australian Navy, he replied, "Anything you want to know about me, see Billy Hughes. He is Minister for the Navy and understands my case." Subsequently, Hunt admitted that in an application for honorary membership of the Masonic Club, he had stated that he was a lieutenant-commander.
