U-BOAT CAMPAIGN
AMERICAN COAST HUNT FOR RAIDERS FOUR VICTIMS IN FIVE DAYS (Reed. 7.30 p.m.) NEW YORK, Jan. 19 The United States Navy Department announced that the American tanker Malay, of 8207 tons, was damaged by a submarine off the Atlantic coast. The Malay was approaching the safety of a port. It is officially announced that at least one is dead of the crew of 33. The submarine without warning
shelled the Malay from a distance of 500 yards and then fired a torpedo from 1500 yards. The Malay was the fourth submarine victim in five days. The survivors of, the Panama freighter (the loss of which was announced yesterday), who landed at a port on the east coast of Canada, said enemy submarines were "almost as thick as catfish" in the waters where their ship was attacked. These sinkings have brought the entire resources of the army and navy coastal units into focus to find the Axis raiders, which are believed to be operate ing in a pack ranging up and down the coast from Canada to Florida. The Navy earlier announced that a Standard Oil tanker, the Allan Jackson, of 6635 tons, was torpedoed and sunk off the North Carolina coast. Thirteen survivors of the crew of 35 were rescued, the remainder being apparently drowned or burned to death. Survivors of the Allan Jackson told grim stories of their struggles to escape the flames after spending six terrifying hours in an open boat, battling to keep clear of the suction of the burning and sinking ship, from which oil and flames spread rapidly.
