SUSPENDED AIR MAIL
ALTERNATIVE SERVICE GREAT BRITAIN AND AMERICA [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION'! WELLINGTON, Tuesday The Postmaster-General, the Hon. P. 0. Webb, announced that in consequence of the suspension of the Pacific air service there was at present no air mail service to •which the 5s 9cl and 4s rates applied. An alternative service, however, had been provided for the despatch of correspondence for the United Kingdom, Europe, Canada and the United States. Air despatch will be given over as groat a portion of the distance as circumstances permit, the transit time to the United Kingdom under normal conditions being estimated at approximately 25 to 35 days. The rates for the new service are: Letters for the United Kingdom and Europe, 3s 6d per half ounce; for Canada and the United States, Is 3d per half ounce. The Minister said this service would provide the best despatch pdssible at present. No special superscription on covers was necessary, but articles must have blue air mail labels. The new service was additional to the one under which surface transit to the United States and air transit across the Atlantic was available at 2s 6d per half ounce.
