AUCKLAND EXCHANGE , a ' 11:LIFELESS CONDITIONS Business was again very restricted on tiie Auckland Stocli Exchange yesterday, with the tone of the market very subdued. The leading insurances showed a further slight improvement, and New Zealands changed hands 6d higher. This and the sustained demand for gilt-edged issues were the only features of an otherwise lifeless day. CLOSING QUOTATIONS

SUEZ CANAL COMPANY NAZI BID TOR CONTROL LONDON, Jan. 9 It is unconfirmedly reported that Mr. T. Harrison Hughes, vice-president of the Suea Canal Company, who recently resigned from the Ministry of War Transport, is preparing to reorganise the company. It is suggested that the reorganisation may include the formation of a holding company in London or New York to control the Sue? Canal Company. «• The Daily Express says: "Britain and her Allies must prepare soon to fight a financial battle for the Suez Canal with tfie Germans. British guns hold'the canal, but Dr. Funk, the German Economic Minister, and his financial bandits, hold control of the company's head office in Paris, and all its records. "The Nazis have been trying, since the falj of France, to track down and secure Suez Canal shares. The French directors of the company in occupied France are powerless. Presumably they would welcome complete Allied control of the company."
