EXCESSIVE PRICE CASE
STOREKEEPER PROSECUTED (0.C.) HAMILTON, Friday
A Kawhia storekeeper, G. G. Jonathan (Mr. A. G. Ward), was charged before Mr. W. H. Freeman, S.M., in Hamilton to-day with selling goods in excess of the price fixed by the Price Tribunal.
Mr. J. R. FitzGerald, who represented the tribunal, stated that defendant had sold half a pound of cocoa to a customer for 2s 6d, when the price he-charged for cocoa in September, 1939, was Is Bd. This represented an overcharge of 33 1-3 per cent. He sold 711). of salt, to the same customer for Is s|d, which was an overcharge of approximately 35 per cent on the cost price.
For the defence, Mr. Ward stated that defendant was an elderly man and had difficulty in getting assistants. The cocoa and salt had been sold by an inexperienced assistant. It was an isolated case and the money had been made up to the customer. Defendant was fined £5 and costs on each charge.
