BOYS FOR FARMS
LEAVING SCHOOL EARLIER MEETING LABOUR SHORTAGE To assist the State Placement Service in meeting the demands of farmers for seasonal labour the Auckland Education Board decided at its meeting yesterday to grant permission for Form 11. pupils to leave school before the end of the year, subject to the approval of the headmaster. The decision followed receipt of a letter from the head teacher of the Hamilton East School. The scheme to relieve the farm labour shortage by using schoolboys and university students during the school holidays has been brought forward early this year to allow farmers to take full advantage of it. Last year it was started lato and did not yield its full benefit to the farming community. The labour position on farms since last season has, under war conditions, not become any easier, and a steady flow of inquiries with regard to schoolboy labour has been received by the State Placement Service.
