GERMAN RULE CONDITIONS News, satisfactory in the maiii, of conditions in the German-occupied Channel Islands is received from time to time by members of the South African Channel Islands Association. Letters come to them from'" various sources and by various meajis. One writer from Guernsey doubtless explains a good deal when he says that the German commander was a prisoner or war in Liverpool during the last war and remembers how kin(J the English were to him. Relatives and friends, says another,, may rest assured that those in Guernsey are not suffering any ill-treatment by the Germans. "Conditions here_ are surprisingly good," says the writer. "Everybody over here is quite cheerrul and in good health." „ . Other news items are that the Alaernev cows are being after, and will be restored to their righttul owners. "Wireless and Sundav services are as usual. Fishing is allowed. Everybody is growing vegetables, keeping all they want and selling the rest. All the tinned food has been taken over ana is rationed. The coal will _last until February, when they are going to cut down trees for burning. a , Salt is being _got from the sea ana fat from fish. Windmills will be used for charging dynamos. No one will, go hungry. Clothing and boot repairs are rationed. People are allowed one ca* of soap a month. No civilian has been court-martialled and none shot or im since the occupation. There nnmication between Guernsey and Jersey, and people are allowed to travel by permit.
