RAIDER VICTIM
DEATH IN GERMANY
MISS E. A. M. HARCOURT
TRYING EXPERIENCES (0.C.) WELLINGTON. Sunday
Advice has been received from the High Commissioner in London, Mr. W. J. Jordan, of the death of Miss Eveline Alice Marion Harcourt, 0.8. E., while a prisoner of war at Liebebau,, Wurtemburg, Germany. Miss Harcourt and Miss Acland, of Canterbury, were among the prisoners taken from the Port Hobart when she was sunk by enemy action off Puerto Rico on November 24 last year. Miss Harcourt was the elder daughter of the late Mr. J. B. Harcourt, of Wellington, where she was born in 1878.
During the last war Miss Harcourt was associated with Lady Myers in work at Base Records, Wellington, and was awarded the 0.8. E. for her services. She was last in New Zealand in 1936, when she left for a tour of Europe, including Germany and France. She was returning to NewZealand on the Port Hobart, and after the ship was destroyed she spent 17 weeks on the raider, with makeshift clothing. After being landed she was moved from place to place ,in France for some weeks. As she had never been robust, hardships undermined her health, and after a time in a German prison camp she was sent to Wesermuende for hospital treatment. Miss Harcourt was 19 weeks in hospital, and stated in a letter that she was being well and kindly treated. It was from Weserrnuende that she was transferred to Liebebau, where she died. Two of her brother, Messrs. Stanton and Gordon Harcourt, are well known in Wellington, and another brother, Major H. Harcourt-, is with the forces in 3£enya. Mrs. G. Gillon, of Wellington, is a sister.
