LOCOMOTIVE RECOVERED
LIFT FROM RIVER-BED
WANGAEHU ACCIDENT SEQUEL fBY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] WANGANUI, Sunday
After lying on its side in the Wangaehu River, near Wanganui, for 65 days, a B-class locomotive which plunged off a bridge when a goods train was wrecked on the night of October 1, was lifted back to the track yesterday. Two heavy-duty 40-ton cranes accomplished the lift in remarkably quick time, and carried out a task unusual in New Zealand's railway history. The locomotive plunged off the bridge after a goods train, bound from Wanganui to Marton, was partially derailed while descending tho Wangaohu lull. .No lives were lost. With tho exception of a truck which plunged into tho river, all the rolling-stock involved in the accident was salvaged a few days later. I
Tho task of lifting the locomotive and tender, however, was more formidable. Sever&l weeks' preparation were necessary. Tho services of a diver wero required, and 1 two weeks elapsed before the strops could be placed round the locomotive.
