THE HOME GUARD
Sir,—Two items in Thursday's
Herald make interesting reading: (1) Mr. Churchill, speaking in the House of Commons, said, "The Home Guard is our great prop and standby against invasion." (2) Combined manoeuvres of Home Guard at Buddy's Hill, To Kuiti, cancelled because Oil Fuel Controller has intimated that petrol licences in future will not be granted to New Zealand Home Guardsmen to attend parades. Could anything be more tragic? Those of us in the Home Guard have carried on under many difficulties, always realising that th« Army, And
National Reserve had to be fitted out before we got anything, many spending to 10s a month on petrol and some considerably more, and doing it willingly in the hope that we would be fitting ourselves for the test if it came.
Now that equipment is coming to hand and we have something with which to make ourselves useful, and the danger of invasion more real than at any time in New Zealand's history, our petrol, for which we have to pay, is to be cut off, while apparently aliens can get plenty and large quantities are squandered on racing and in other ways. Home Guardsman.
